University Park, named for its association with the University of Southern California, is a diverse neighborhood within historic West Adams and is near Downtown LA, the Coliseum and Exposition Park, and Mount St Mary's College. In 1979, HPOZs (Historically Protected Overlay Zones) were created by the city to preserve and protect the historical culture, character and architecture of many Los Angeles neighborhoods. University Park, like many of the other surrounding pocket neighborhoods such as Adams-Normandie, Harvard Heights, and Lafayette Square to name a few, is designated as an HPOZ.
